Arkansas

Anne Rudell Hudson Carden, 93, of Little Rock, Arkansas, died peacefully July 25, 2004, at Parkway Village with her loving family at her bedside. She was born February 13, 1911, in Union County Mississippi to Rev. Luther L. and Wilmer Snipes Jordan, and was a life-long Christian and 60-year member of Immanuel Baptist Church of Little Rock.
She was preceded in death by her teenage sweetheart and husband, Charles Ross Hudson, Sr., and second husband Al C. Carden, two brothers, Alvin and Martin Jordan, and a sister, Jennie Bell Wagoner.
She is survived by her sons, Charles R. Hudson, Jr., Robert Jordan Hudson, Sr., and daughter-in-law Carolyn Stanfield Hudson, two grandchildren, Robert J. Hudson, Jr., Michelle Leiter and husband Milton, and two great-grandchildren, Walker and Natalie Leiter.
Rudell was a lifetime member of the PTA, serving as a local president. She welcomed newcomers to Little Rock for many years and volunteered her talents as a seamstress while living at Presbyterian Village. She delighted in sharing her baked goods with family and friends. She was a devoted Bible student, friend to many, and the best listener for all who   new her
The family will receive friends from 10:00 to 11:30 AM Wednesday, July 28, 2004, at the Roller Chenal Funeral Home (224-8300). A graveside service will be held at Mount Carmel Cemetery in Cabot, Arkansas, at 2:00 PM. Her Memorial Service will be held at Immanuel Baptist Church Chapel on Thursday, July 29, 2004, at 10:00AM.

Nannie R. Claunch, 90, of Greenwood, formerly of the Subiaco- Scranton area, died Monday, Nov. 7, 2005. She was a homemaker, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, lifelong educator, hometown mayor, senior spelling bee champion, member of the United Methodist Church and church pianist. Preceding her in death: husband, Horrice C. "Cotton" Claunch; parents, James F. and Nannie E. (Harris) Snipes; sisters, Inez Harrellson and Ardis Snipes; brothers, Huey, Albert, Howard, Wilbur Lee, Eugene "Buddy," Fred and C.L. Snipes.
Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 11, 2005, at Roller Chapel in Paris with burial at McKendree Cemetery in Subiaco under the direction of Roller Funeral Home of Paris. Sign the online guest book at www.rollerfuneralhomes.com.

Description: The Southern Christian Advocate was the official publication  for the Methodist Conferences in the states of South Carolina, Georgia,  and Florida. Many death and obituary notices were included in the publication of this periodical. This database contains only these notices and covers the issues from 1867 to 1878. Funeral services for Mrs. Marlene McKinnon Snipes, 73, will be held at 10 AM, Monday, May 23, 2005 in the chapel of George H. Hewell and Son Funeral Home, 4140 University Blvd., S., with Pastor Billy Jones officiating. Marlene was born in Douglas, Georgia on May 18, 1932 and moved to Jacksonville, Florida when she was 8 years old. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, B. Ed. Snipes Jr., 2 daughters, Debbie (Don) Morris, Dee Dee (Jack) Day; 1 son Eddie (Sherry) Snipes, and 1 brother, Randy Bennett. Mrs. Snipes is also survived by and known as "Mimi" to her 9 grandchildren, Derrick, Krissy, Melissa, Shea, Maren, Heidi, Cody, Brittany, and Bo; and 3 great grandchildren, Katie, Cami, and Cayla. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She was an active member of the Englewood Baptist Church and also a member of "The Daughters of the Nile." W.T. Snipes -- Braselton -- funeral services will be at 4 p.m. today at the chapel of Ward's Funeral Home of Gainesville for Willard Thomas Snipes, 56, of Braselton, route 1.
The Rev. Clack Stubbs will officiate, and interment will be in Alta Vista Cemetery. The body is at the funeral home and will be placed in the chapel at 3:30 p.m. today. Mr. Snipes, a native of Lafayette County, Fla. Who had lived in Hall County for 13 years, died Tuesday at the Northeast Georgia Medical Center following a brief illness. He was a veteran of World War II and was employed as a security guard for the Wrigley Company. He was a member of the South Side Baptist Church in Tallahassee, Fla.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Rosa Hudgins Snipes, Braselton, route 1; one son, Roger Snipes, Gainesville; six sisters: Mrs. Earl (Loree) Yon,Tallahassee; Mrs. Elbert (Lillian) Buchanan, Mayo, Fla.; Mrs. Leonard (Lois) Williams, Cross City, Fla.; Mrs. Morris (Gladys) Roberts, Mayo Fla.; Mrs. Harmon (Maxine) Sapp, Tallahassee; Mrs. Calvin (Eldis) Marshall, Tallahassee; two brothers: Donald Snipes, Empire, La.; Averett Snipes, Albany; one grandson and nieces and nephews.

ELLAVILLE ---  Mrs. Lois P. Turner, 90, of 229 W. College St., died at Magnolia Nursing Center in Americus on Saturday, June 4, 2005, an extended event. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today, Tuesday, June 7, at Hopewell United Methodist Church, with burial to follow in the Ellaville Cemetery. The Rev. Graton Helms will officiate.

Mrs. Turner was born Nov. 15, 1914, in Schley County, the daughter of James M. and Ellie Snipes Persons. She retired from Manhattan Shirt Company and was a member of Hopewell United Methodist Church. Mrs. Turner was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Turner and by her sister, Minnie Persons.

urvivors include one son and daughter-in-law, James and Martha Turner of Atlanta; two grandchildren, Debbie Marett and her husband, Steven, and David Turner; and three great-grandchildren, Jeremy Marett, Josh Marett and Zack Turner also survive.
Pallbearers will include Chuck Pless, Jimmy Harrison, Bobby Miller, Hugh Donnan, Calvin Owens and Henry Sellars. A visitation was held from 7-9 p.m. Monday at Watson-Giddens Funeral Home in Ellaville. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hopewell United Methodist Church, P.O. SNIPESVILLE -- Mrs. Willene Worth Snipes, 78, died Aug. 24 at SouthGeorgia Medical Center in Valdosta.
The Coffee County native lived in Jeff Davis County most of her life. She was a member of Union Springs Baptist Church and a homemaker. She was the widow of Arthur P. Snipes Sr.
SURVIVORS: a son, Jimmy Snipes of Snipesville; a daughter, Martha Branch of Jesup; sisters, Lucille Quigg of York, S. C., and Iva Mae Yeager of Panama City Beach, Fla. ; brothers, Daniel L. Worth of Covington and Roy Eugene Worth of Decatur; 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

FUNERAL: 3 p.m. Sunday at Union Springs Baptist Church, burial in the church cemetery.

Jesse Snipes, 84, died Friday at 9 p.m. in his home in Poole.  There are no survivors except nieces and nephews. His wife died last year.

Funeral services were conducted Monday at 2 p.m. in the General Baptist church in Poole with the Rev. W.W. Oakley officiating. Burial was in Shady Grove cemetery, Poole, with Masons in charge.

 Description: This collection of marriage and death notices continues the collection begun in Reformed Presbyterian Marriages and Deaths, 1843-1863. These notices, compiled by Lowry Ware were taken from Associate Reformed Presbyterian church records and newspapers. They  cover the twenty-two year period of 1866-1888. 

All together, this database contains over 4200 names of persons who  were listed in marriage or death notices and often shows family relations. In a few cases, significant details were also included.  Although taken from records in South Carolina, persons from throughout the South can be found within this collection.

Died June 22d, 1887 at the residence of his step-father, Sion Snipes, near Ellistown, Union County, Miss., Walter Houston Osborn, aged 11 years, 4 months and 29 days... son of Rev. A. H. Osborn and Mrs. Nancy (Peterson) Osborn and was born in Lee County, Miss., June 23rd, 1876. His father died October 4th, 1877 and he was left to the care of his mother. She contracted a second marriage to Mr. Sion Snipes in 1880.
 
Died at Union County, Miss. on Tuesday, August 28th, 1888, Mrs. Mary Jane Snipes, wife of Mr. S. Walker Snipes, aged 23 years, 3 months and 18  days... daughter of Alexander M. and Martha E. (Spence) Galloway and was born in Pontotoc (now Lee) County, Miss., May 10th, 1865... joined at Bethany [church], August 6th, 1879... was married to S. W. Snipes, December 19th, 1883. They moved to neighborhood of Hopewell in the fall of 1884... [p.197] mother of three children [one died previously]...one but six days old when his mother died.

BURLINGTON
Mr. Henry J. ``Red'' Snipes, 79, of 150 Oliver Lane died at midnight, Friday, Nov. 7, 1997, at the Hospice Home of Burlington after six months of failing health, three weeks critical.
A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of Mrs. Omie Page Snipes, who survives, and the son of Mr. Jeter T. Snipes and Mrs. Ruth Godfrey Snipes, both deceased. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and was a retired painting contractor. He was a former member of the Lakeview Civitan Club and was a charter member of Lakeview Community United Church of Christ, where he was a former deacon and treasurer for many years.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include a daughter, Mrs. Arlene Snipes Lassiter of Burlington; two brothers, Mr. Allen Snipes of Burlington and Mr. Otto Snipes of Greensboro; and five grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Mrs. Anita Snipes Rich; and six brothers.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Lakeview Community United Church of Christ by the Rev. Reid Dickens, pastor, and the Rev. Curtis Oakley. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park.
The family will be at Lakeview Community United Church of Christ from 6 to 8 Sunday evening and at other times at the home.

MOREHEAD CITY - Gerald Ward Snipes, 73, of Morehead City, died June 9, 2005 at Craven Regional Medical Center.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Munden Funeral Home with the Rev. Tim Havlicek officiating. Burial will follow in Gethsemane Memorial Park.
He was born and raised in the area known as "The Promised Land" in Morehead City. He was a veteran, serving 20 years in the U.S. Coast Guard and retired from Civil Service at Cherry Point.
Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Pauline Snipes of Morehead City; two daughters, Cheryl Ann Snipes of Columbia, S.C. and Jill Snipes of Morehead City; three sons, Jerry Allen Snipes of Texas, David Snipes of Holly Springs and Joey Snipes of Cary; and 14 grandchildren.

He is survived by his son, James S. Ruth Heath Galloway, 93, of Copas Road , Shallotte, NC, died August 21, 2005, in the Autumn Care of Shallotte.
Born in Augusta, GA, on September 8, 1911, she was a daughter of the late Robert Alexander and Ida Lee Milton Heath. She was predeceased by her husband, Marion Leon Galloway, the former mayor and police chief of Shallotte, NC, whom she married in 1934, and a sister, Lucille H. McDonald, and brother, LTC Milton Heath. She was a charter member of the Shallotte Presbyterian Church having been a member of the church choir and Sunday School Teacher. She attended Weslyan College, Macon, GA, and graduated from Greensboro College. Prior to her retirement she was an educator with Brunswick County School System having taught at various locations throughout the county and was a past resident of the Brunswick County Teacher?s Association. Surviving are a son, Robert Leon Galloway, Shallotte; two daughters, Ida Ruth G. Smith and husband Daniel, N. Myrtle Beach, SC, and Marion G. Snipes and husband Conway, Ft. Worth, TX, a sister, Mary H. Phillips, Durham, NC; five grandchildren, Libby Snipes, Renee and husband Ron Douglas, Dawn Thomas, Lynn Smith, Buzzy Smith; and seven great-grandchildren.     
Funeral services will be conducted on Tuesday, August 23rd at 2:00 p.m. in the Shallotte Presbyterian Church. Burial will follow in the Mt. Olive Cemetery, Bolivia, NC.

Born May 11, 1952 in Anderson, she was the owner of Cut-Ups Hair Design and was a member of New Prospect Baptist Church.
Surviving are her husband, Ken, of the home; one son, Reggie Luper of Anderson; one daughter, Amanda McAnelly of Anderson; three grandchildren, Tyler McAnelly, Aiden and Kennedy Luper; mother, Betty Evelyn Vernon Whitworth of Anderson; sister, Lisa Gillespie of Pendleton; three step sisters, Elaine Snipes and Tamara Reber, both of Charlotte, NC and Myra Pace of Augusta, Ga.
She was the daughter of the late Billy E. Snipes and the late James E. Whitworth.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Forest Lawn Mausoleum Chapel conducted by Rev. Scotty Hendricks. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Monday at Sullivan-King Mortuary, Downtown Chapel, 401 N. Main Street. The family is at the residence.

David "Doc" S. Snipes, 77, died peacefully on Monday, June 13, 2005, at his home in Central, S.C.
A son of the late Luther and Lillian Dagenhart Snipes, he was born in Darlington, S.C., on April 16, 1928, but lived most of his early life in Morganton, N.C. Dave had a life-long love of the Blue Ridge Mountains western North Carolina, and University of North Carolina Tar Heel basketball. He obtained his undergraduate degree from Wake Forest University and served in the U.S. Army from 1950 to 1953. Dave served in the Korean War (1952-53) as an Infantry Rifle platoon leader and won the Bronze Star. Dave was also an Airborne Ranger and earned the Combat Infantryman's Badge during the war.

Doc took postgraduate work at the University of Kansas from 1953 to 1956. He was a geologist with the California Oil Company in New Orleans, La., and Jackson, Miss., from 1957 to 1960. Dave entered the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1960 and received his Ph.D. in Geology in 1963. He was a Geology professor at Furman University from 1963 to 1968. He was professor of Geology at Clemson University from 1968 until his retirement in 1998. Towards the end of his career, Dave became actively involved with ground water research, primarily at the Savannah River Project in lower South Carolina, ad was nationally known for expertise in hydrogeology. Dave was the author of numerous scholarly scientific articles on all facets of geology. He was the driving force in the formation of Clemson University's annual hydrogeology symposium. In his honor, this symposium now bears his name. Survivors include his devoted wife of 51 years, Frances Stephenson Snipes; son, Mike Snipes of Dallas, Texas, and his three children, Michael Jr., Katie and Morgan; daughters, Anne Garabedian and husband, Haig, of LaGrange, Ill., and children, Michael and Elizabeth, Janice Noth and husband, Jim, of Burr Ridge, Ill., and children Kate, Gwynne, Mark, and Matt, and Joy Downes and husband, Ray, of Apex, N.C.
A memorial service will be held Friday, June 17, 2005, at 3 p.m. at Duckett-Robinson Funeral Home. The family will receive friends prior to the service, starting at 2 p.m.

On Monday, Aug. 29, 2005, Cheryl Jean Martin went joyfully into the arms of God. She resided at 1605 Breazeale Road, Belton, S.C. She was born in Prince William County, Va., at Quantico Marine Base. She moved to Anderson with her family in 1962 and graduated from T.L. Hanna High School. She graduated from Winthrop College with a degree in home economics education and was a graduate fellow in ornamental textiles from Tokyo Kaisei Daigatku, Tokyo, Japan. She attended Clemson University graduate school, and received her master's in consumer science from Winthrop. She began her career with Duke Power Company in 1973 as a home economist in Anderson, and held various marketing positions ending with merchandising supervisor in Winston-Salem, N.C. She returned to Anderson in 1986 to become a State Farm agent. As an agent, she was honored as a member of the President's Club, and was designated Silver Scroll Legion of Honor. She was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the Chancel Choir for more than 30 years and had served as a director of the children's choirs, a member of the Worship Committee and adult Sunday School teacher. She was active in the Junior Assembly of Anderson, serving as president in 1986. She is survived by her parents, Herman and Connie Snipes Martin; her sister, Lynette Pannell; nephew and wife, Josh and Carrie Pannell and daughter, Mary DuPre, all of Anderson; nephew, Spec. Charlie and wife, Bethany Pannell of Fort Carson, Colo.; and nephew, Andy Pannell of Greenwood. She is also survived by her State Farm team, Sherrie Benfield and Harriett Henderson, and Josh Pannell, and by a wonderful group of loyal and loving friends, including the Friday Friends: Susan Ayen, Cherry and Jeannie Causey, Lynette Pannell and Jacque Post, Special friends, Sherilyn Hill and Rosanne Kinley and her other family, Fredda and Keith Culbreth and children, Susan Chandler and John Keith and Pat Mullen, who took such good care of her; and her constant companion, her Boykin spaniel, "Mulley." A memorial service will be held Thursday, Sept. 1, 2005, at 4 p.m. at St. John's United Methodist Church, officiated by Dr. William R. Childs.

Winfred B. Snipes of 4 Cahu Drive, Taylors, SC, passed away at his residence Dec. 9, 2005.
The son of the late Glen and Florence Snipes, Winfred was born and raised in Morganton, N.C. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Winda Debra Snipes. He was a graduate of Morganton High School and Gardner-Webb University. He served as a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Air Force, during which he was stationed at Donaldson Air Force Base in Greenville, S.C. Winfred was a retired executive of Canal Insurance Company in Greenville. He was a member of St. Francis Episcopal Church and the American Legion.
Mr. Snipes is survived by a loving family and a faithful brother, Max G. Snipes, of Columbia, S.C.
A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 12, 2005, in Forest Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, Mid-Atlantic Affiliate, Memorials & Tributes Processing Center, P.O. LANCASTER -- Mrs. Ethel F. Williams Snipes, 88, of 3328 Taxahaw Road died Monday, Jan. 23, 2006, at Springs Memorial Hospital.
The funeral will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at Pleasant Dale Baptist Church, with the Revs. Jack Nunn and Jessie Adams officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.
A native of Pageland, Mrs. Snipes was a daughter of the late James Williams and Alice Williams. She was a member of Pleasant Dale Baptist Church, where she was the Sunday school secretary for the Adult Department. She was a former employee of Springs Industries and was a retired seamstress. She was the widow of Ernest Melvin Snipes.
Surviving are five sons, Pete Snipes, Dimp Snipes, Jimmy Snipes and Donnie Snipes, all of Lancaster, and Landon Snipes of Dallas, N.C.; her daughter, JoAnn Snipes of Lancaster; 10 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 tonight at Mahaffey Funeral Home and other times at the home of Pete Snipes, 2417 Lynwood Drive.
Memorials may be made to the Pleasant Dale Baptist Church, building fund, 133 S. Potter Road, Lancaster, SC 29720.

ROCK HILL -- Mrs. Sherry Snipes Tate, 55, of 1322 Friar Road died Sunday, June 18, 2006.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Edgemoor ARP Church. A family burial will be at Hopewell Cemetery at a later date.
A native of Rock Hill, Mrs. Tate was a daughter of the late John Dustin and Katie Nunn Snipes. She was secretary/treasurer for Tate Electronics Corp., secretary of M&S Tate Commercial Properties, and was previously manager of Rite-Time Rentals. She was a member of Lakewood Baptist Church and earned an associate's degree in electronic technologies from York Technical College.
Surviving are her husband, Michael Lee Tate; her daughter, Lisa Tate Robbins of Edgemoor; two sisters; and three grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at the home of her daughter, Lisa and Michael Robbins, 4307 Edgeland Road, Edgemoor.

Mary Nellie Liles was the daughter of Robert Newton Liles and Elizabeth Jane Whitledge and the granddaughter of John Liles and Rachel McMullins.
